The Carbon Market

A new era in Québec’s fight against climate change dawned on January 1, 2013, when the first compliance period for Québec’s Cap-and-trade System for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Allowances (C&T system) got under way. Québec has thus become one of the carbon market pioneers of the Western Climate Initiative (WCI).

Going forward, businesses subject to the Regulation respecting a cap‑and‑trade system for greenhouse gas emission allowances must take carbon costs into consideration when making decisions.

The C&T system constitutes the Government of Québec’s primary strategic tool for fighting climate change, and it is funding the 2013–2020 Climate Change Action Plan.
