Lima 2014 - Conférence des Nations Unies

The 20th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP-20) took place from December 1 to December 12, 2014. Its purpose was to establish the bases on which a new international climate agreement replacing the Kyoto Protocol can be negotiated at the Paris COP-21 in December, 2015.

The aim of the future agreement, which will come into effect in 2020, is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit global warming to 2ºC above pre-industrial levels as compared to the beginning of the industrial age.

A Québec delegation to Lima led by the Minister of Sustainable Development, the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, David Heurtel, participated in various activities and events between December 7 and December 10.

David Heurtel, Quebec Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change was the keynote speaker of ICAP (International Carbon Action Partnership) during the "ETS and Carbon Pricing worldwide: Current status and the road ahead" event in Lima this week. He presented the latest developments with regards to the Quebec-California carbon market and underligned the importance to integrate the market mechanisms in the next climate's agreement.

The Climate Group is an international non-profit organization that works with corporate and government leaders to promote a prosperous, low-carbon future. Quebec became co-chair of the Climate Group for the Americas in December 2011 with a two-year mandate (2012-2014), and has just been reappointed in that role.

Minister David Heurtel spoke at the Institut de la Francophonie pour le développement durable’s “Contribution de la Francophonie à l'accord post-2020” event. The Minister’s remarks dealt with energizing Francophone countries to support the proposed wording on market mechanisms in the draft Paris agreement.
